History and Importance of Katano Shrine
Katano Shrine has existed for a long time, with its origins dating back to the era of Emperor Suinin. However, during the time of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the importance of this shrine greatly increased. In 1583 (Tensho 11), when Toyotomi Hideyoshi was constructing Osaka Castle, he designated Katano Shrine as the guardian shrine for the "demon gate" of Osaka Castle. The "demon gate" refers to the northeastern direction, which is considered a direction through which evil spirits can easily enter. Hideyoshi sought to borrow the power of Katano Shrine to prevent negative influences from this direction.

Relationship with the Toyotomi Family
The relationship between Katano Shrine and the Toyotomi family continued beyond Hideyoshi's era. In 1602 (Keicho 7), Toyotomi Hideyori sponsored a major renovation of the main hall and other structures. This resulted in the shrine buildings being lavishly refurbished, allowing Katano Shrine to boast its magnificent appearance.

Value as Cultural Property
Currently, the main hall and ridge tags of Katano Shrine are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. These are valuable cultural assets that convey the architectural style of the Momoyama period to the present day and are important heritage sites that tell the story of the deep connection with the Toyotomi family.

Katano Shrine's Position in Modern Times

Even today, Katano Shrine is widely known as "the shrine that guards the demon gate of Osaka Castle." Due to its historical background and cultural value, it has become a famous spot that attracts many worshippers and tourists, serving as one of the important locations embodying the history and culture of Osaka.
